Choose the right hydraulic platform for your loading area

Hydraulic loading platforms located in loading and unloading areas allow goods to be raised and lowered from the dock floor to the floor of the truck bed, thus fulfilling the same purpose as conventional loading levellers: to bridge the difference in level between the two floor levels. However, unlike the latter, they allow the loading and unloading of goods from vehicles with very different heights, beyond the reach of loading levelers.

When are they more useful: hydraulic loading platform with or without pit? Clear your doubts.

Features and advantages of hydraulic loading platforms

These platforms have a reinforced structure that allows them to withstand the dynamic stresses exerted by loading equipment such as forklift trucks.

They are manufactured for loads of up to 10 000 Kg with a maximum size of 4 000 x 2 500 mm. Optionally, they can be fitted with hinged flaps to close the gap between the platform and the vehicle.

In many cases, loading points are located in areas exposed to aggressive environmental conditions, where corrosion of the platform can be significant. In such a case, it is recommended that the machine is manufactured with a hot-dip galvanized treatment to ensure a longer service life of the machine.

Advantages of hydraulic loading platforms

Hydraulic platforms located on loading docks have two main advantages over conventional loading levelers:

  • Loading or unloading is safer, as both floors (truck bed and loading dock) are at the same level, with no slope.
  • It is the only equipment capable of moving from ground level to any height of the transport vehicle, whether they are vans or large trucks.

Types and models of hydraulic loading platforms on loading docks

Now it’s time to find out which of these platforms best suits your circumstances and needs.

Here are the guidelines you need to follow to make the right choice:

Pitted or pitless?

Advantages of pitless loading platforms

pitless loading platforms

Hydraulic lifting platforms do not necessarily need to be installed inside a pit, but can be mounted on a concrete slab. The great advantage is that, as they do not require the construction of a pit, they significantly reduce installation costs.

Not only that, but also drainage problems and higher levels of corrosion are avoided.

Advantages of loading platforms with a pit

loading platforms with a pit

The main advantage lies in the fact that these platforms, as they are embedded in a pit, the surface is flush with the outside ground, thus ceasing to be an obstacle to traffic.
They also allow the loading dock to operate with a conventional leveller, which makes loading and unloading more agile. In other words, you have two options at the same loading point, using the one that is more efficient and safer, given the height of the transport vehicle.

The size of the platform

The size will be determined by the type of vehicle and the transport machinery to be used (manual equipment, forklift trucks, electric pallet trucks…). It is very important that before making a decision, the nature of the transport vehicles to be supplied and the means available for loading and unloading the goods are well known.

Lifting capacity

Once the size of the platform has been determined, the maximum weight of the goods to be transferred, the weight of the transport equipment to be used and the average weight of an operator must be added together. This gives an approximate lifting capacity to be supported by the selected platform.

Other options

There are more options available for the selection of the ideal hydraulic platform: power supply and control units, finishes, handrails…
