There are a variety of signalling systems for loading and unloading docks on the market that improve safety while trucks approach the loading area. Let’s take an in-depth look at each of them:
Detection and signalling systems
- Photocells
- Proximity sensors
- Limit switches
A detection system is a set of sensors that detect the position of elements involving in the loading and unloading of goods, such as the leveller, shelter, dock door and chocks. Each element is controlled by a control panel and can be interconnected, meaning they cannot overlap or perform correct actions.
At Alapont Logistics, we have various models depending on the configuration of your loading dock. The complete control panel makes the loading area safer, as it works sequentially. Examples include preventing the sectional door from opening until the shelter is inflated and impeding the movement of the leveller if the door is closed.

Signalling systems
A signalling system is a set of light and sound signals. Light signals usually take the form of traffic lights that tell the driver if they can move during the loading and unloading of goods. They use green and red LEDs. When using wheel-lock restraints with manual doors, the traffic lights let the driver know whether the vehicle is restrained or not. As a safety feature, the truck will not be released until the operator closes the loading dock door.
Spotlights can also be a great help. In particular, they are used to provide enough light to make loading and unloading operations safe, preventingaccidents caused by lack of light. They also allow operators to work faster, more safely and more accurately, thanks to proper illumination of the loading point.
Light levels will vary depending on where they are being installed.
At Alapont Logistics, we offer these safety measures as well as others, such as protection barriers, wheel guides, bollards and wheel-lock restrains which help to increase safety at loading docks.
